Documentary flimmakers Keith Hayward and Jenniffer Berglund of Prehensile Productions contacted Ciara on 23rd of 2010, through a recomendation by Dr. Flora Lu of UC Santa Cruz, interested in making a documentary flim featuring the incredible biodiversity of the Tiputini River in Ecuador and touching upon the realties facing the Waodani Nation today (as opposed to a common documentary flim tactic where Waodani are asked to hide their cell phones, remove their clothing, and try and behave as their grandparents did).
Keith and Jennie came to visit Kewediono on the 11th of April and stayed a week in the community: teaching documentary film tecniques to the students, learning about the guide-book project, presenting their documentary idea to the community and identifying students who would be interested in participating, as well getting the go-ahead to proceed on finding funding to realize the film.
We are very excited because this film will showcase the amazing work these Waodani youth are capable of doing. We also hope it will help us garner the interest and support we need to build up this program and ensoure its sustainability into the future. These guidebooks are just the first step in a larger effort to create an education system that places emphasis on student directed scientific inquiry to address community resource and sustainability concerns, and redefines the formal schooling structure to incorporate traditional methods of transmitting cultural knowledge according to community objectives. Ultimately, these youth can become the technicians monitoring their forest resources and hunting levels in order to ensure sustainable hunting and secure forest resources for the future.
